On-Campus Recruitment Summer (OCRS)

The On-Campus Recruitment Summer (OCRS) program runs from the beginning of May to the end of August. The objective of this program is to provide students who are not part of a formal internship or co-op program with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience related to their field of study. Recruiting companies participating in the On-Campus Recruitment Summer program generally book first interviews on campus.

Employer Benefits:

  • This program provides you with an opportunity to select from a pool of candidates for your full-time hire
  • Students can act as "Campus Ambassadors" and help to promote your organization to other students during the academic year
  • Students who have a great work experience in the summer spread the word when they are back on campus

Employers recruit all year round for this program; however, peak time to recruit candidates is in the Winter and Spring semesters. Typical timelines:

  • Job Posting: Winter / Spring
  • On-Campus Interviews: Spring
  • Job Offers: Spring
  • Student Start Dates: May

Interview Bookings:

We will arrange your interview schedule once we receive an email with the list of candidates you want to interview. The list must contain the candidate’s full name and email address. We must receive this no later than 5 business days before the interview date. When the schedule is complete, you will receive a copy by email along with clear directions to campus.

Please check in at the McMaster University Student Centre, Room 226 a minimum of half hour prior to the first interview.

Process for On-Campus Interviewing:

  • Post job(s)
  • We forward applications to you, upon deadline date, via email or you can receive applications as the students apply by logging into OSCARplus.
  • You select candidates to interview
  • We contact and book the candidates for the interview in one of our interview rooms offered free of charge to employers

Summer Career Field Experience

The Summer Career Experience Program isdesigned to increase the availability of summer job opportunities in the Non-Profit sector.

This program is supportive of the experiential learning philosophy: “Experiential learning is a process through which a learner constructs knowledge, skill and value from direct experience.”

In other words, students learn by doing. Your job posting is a great opportunity for students to prepare for life after McMaster. Our goal is to enhance student learning and understanding of employability skills development with guided reflection activities.

As an employer, your participation in this program will allow the student an opportunity to:

  • Relate classroom learning to the "world of work"
  • Build self-confidence in professional abilities
  • Have a window through which they can view the world of work, while still having time to modify plans and career goals

Once you hire a student, your assistance will be needed to guide them in developing their learning plan and to provide feedback and any other additional evaluation at the end of their work term. The benefit of these activities will be well worth the effort with the results being a more productive and engaged student.

The Student Success Centre is committed to working with the students throughout the process and will establish communication with the student midway through the work term to discuss progress and offer advice to maximize the learning opportunity.

Program Overview:

Job opportunities identified for this program will include full-time career experiences (at least 12 weeks in duration) or part-time career experiences (at least 15 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks).

Where to Begin:

Post your jobs free of charge on our job posting portal, OSCARplus, and have access to thousands of potential student applicants. We will require a job description, the application deadline date and method for accepting resumes. We can even assist you with setting up interview schedules at your organization or on campus in one of our interview rooms.

McMaster offers a variety of disciplines within six Faculties:

  • Faculty of Business
  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Faculty of Science
  • Faculty of Social Sciences

Learning Plan:

The Summer Career Experience program offered by the Student Success Centre has been designed to incorporate formal experiential learning. This means the students will work with their immediate supervisor at the beginning of the placement to identify specific competencies that will be enhanced during the placement, based on the job description and their current skill set. From these discussions, the student and the employer will complete a Learning Plan that will identify core competencies that the student would like to develop during their placement.

Site Visits:

Wherever possible, a site visit will be arranged in order to discuss progress and to offer advice to the students to maximize the learning opportunity.

Final Evaluation:

At the end of the placement, the student and the employer will revisit the Learning Plan to comment and provide feedback on the student’s achievements. Overall, this will enable students to experience learning situations in a work environment that they can transfer to other work and life situations.
